Teachers April Update

So much going on with the 6th and 7th grade students in Religious school this year. I get to take off my President hat and put on my teacher hat. J

My 6th grade class has been learning about the history of Jews in AMERICA. Sure they learn about history in their public school classes, you all know I taught in those, but here they learn about where and when their Jewish ancestors got here and what they experienced when they arrived. This leads to many up to date adventures. When we learned that each new temple arranged for a cemetery, we went on a local, very local, field trip to our own cemetery. Lots of questions, lots of learning.

My 7th grade class has a much more somber year of education. We are learning about the Holocaust from the Jewish perspective. While we start off the year with lots of information and background, we then learn about it from the viewpoint of a child around their age. We have read, “The Devils Arithmetic”, and they have done some writing to own what they have read. We will be watching the movie and there will be a final project.

I think both 6th and 7th grade students have more Jewishness to bring to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah from these classes.
